Overview

This module is designed to be taken after the completion of Module 1 – Concepts of animal breeding and genetics,  Module 2 – Breeding objectives and Module 3 – Selection Tools. If you have not completed all previous modules then please go back and complete them before undertaking this module.

BREEDPLAN Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are the most accurate way to predict the genetic merit of an animal. The BREEDPLAN analytical software produces EBVs for a range of economically important traits, and is the world’s most widely used genetic evaluation service for beef cattle.

This module introduces the BREEDPLAN genetic evaluation and outlines how BREEDPLAN EBVs are calculated.

At completion of this module, participants will:

  • Understand that BREEDPLAN EBVs are the most accurate tool that assist producers with animal selection decisions.
  • Understand how the BREEDPLAN analysis calculates EBVs and the importance of data collection.
  • Understand how the BREEDPLAN analysis compares animals running in different environments.
