Using and understanding BREEDPLAN information

Overview

This module is designed to be taken after the completion of Module 1 – Concepts of animal breeding and genetics,  Module 2 – Breeding objectives, Module 3 – Selection Tools and Module 4 – BREEDPLAN Estimated Breeding Values. If you have not completed all previous modules then please go back and complete them before undertaking this module.

The Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and Selection Indexes published in BREEDPLAN evaluations provide an understanding of the genetic merit of an individual animal. Effective use of this information in animal selection decisions drives genetic progress and improves the bottom line of livestock operations.

This module outlines how to interpret BREEDPLAN EBVs and Selection Indexes. The utilisation of BREEDPLAN information as part of animal selection decisions (alongside visual assessment) is also explored.

Learning objectives

At completion of this module, participants will:

  • Know how and where to locate BREEDPLAN results for a range of Australian breeds.
  • Understand how to interpret BREEDPLAN information, including EBVs and Selection Indexes.
  • Understand how to utilise BREEDPLAN information in conjunction with a range of other information (e.g. visual assessment, BULLCHECK results) for animal selection.
