As at June 2024, 16 Australian breed societies and breeding groups publish selection indexes for the production systems in which their breed is commonly used:

  • Some selection indexes will be suitable for purebred systems, while others are suitable for crossbreeding systems
  • Some selection indexes will be suitable for self-replacing systems (e.g. some female progeny retained), while others are designed for terminal systems (e.g. all progeny slaughtered)
  • Each selection index will target different market scenarios. Depending on the breed, these could include vealer, domestic/supermarket, long-fed and export markets.
